Community Hall

Our Gabriola Community Hall is in the last week of its restoration project after the windstorm that blew off the tarp during the repair of the metal roof last fall. The preschool has received most of the restoration - new ceiling, carpets, walls, and new toilets in the children’s washroom. The stairwell had some drywall repair and paint and the upstairs kitchen received new drywall and countertop. Our capable plumber, Arian, is working on the final stretch of the mechanical room restoration which was greatly affected by flood and we should have heat by now.

All programs are back at the Hall, so check out our website: Gabriola Community Hall.com to see what is happening at your Hall. Call Tsiporah at 247-8350 or email her at tsiporah@island.net.

The Hall board wants to express gratitude to Arian Scott of Waypoint Projects as well as Ryan St.Pierre, a most competent electrician. These two tradesmen have gone over and above with their patience and excellent workmanship. Thank you! Gabriola is fortunate to have these two young families join our fair island.

We invite you to our Open House on Sunday October 21st from 2 to 3:30. We are inviting as many people as we can who served on the Community Hall board over many years. GICHA has received a small grant from B.C. Heritage Legacy Fund for the preparation of a Statement of Significance for the Hall. This statement was prepared by Andre Lessard, an architect with 35 years of experience who lives on Gabriola and is a member of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals. Andre has prepared a comprehensive and fascinating document on the heritage value and character of the Hall for the past 100years. This document will promote understanding of the Hall’s importance in the context of the Island as well as its contemporary significance. Watch for more reminders closer to the date.

It has certainly been an interesting summer at the Community Hall. We had a most successful Salmon Barbeque which topped up our bank account in the midst of chaos of the restoration work. Thanks again to Julie Stewart who organized the event. We want to thank Winmar Restoration for coordinating the work and seeing it to completion.

Our Annual General Meeting is in November. Please consider lending your time and expertise to this long standing island community institution.
