The opioid crisis is still raging in BC. According to the BC corner service during the first four months of 2017 there were 488 deaths, 72 of these were in the Island health region. The number of deaths has increased substantially, in 2014 there were 368 deaths, 2015- 518, and in 2016 a huge jump to 935 deaths in BC.

These tragic events highlight the need for a broad response to the current health crisis through education, prevention, outreach, harm reduction, naloxone kits, counselling, substance use treatment and supports, and access to mental health and substance use services.

Island Health has an Opioid harm reductions and treatment strategy which it has been rolling our across the region including the new safer injection sites. Also included in this initiative is expanded harm reduction supply distribution/disposal services in front-line Island Health and community agency locations.

On Gabriola this includes the distribution of safer smoking and injecting kits as well as naloxone training and distribution of kits. Already we have had two Nalaxone training events and more are upcoming.

Island Health personnel are available to distribute safer injecting and smoking kits as well as connecting you to naloxone training event. You can contact social worker Angela or Mental health nurse Cathy to access the kits, training, and referrals to alcohol and drug services or treatment facilities.
