Last fall, Gabriola Lions Club President Graham Miller thought it would be a good idea for our club to sponsor two Gabriola youth in the Lions International Youth Exchange Program.

The program fulfills the first objective of Lions: “To create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world.”

Lion Sharon Robert quickly volunteered to take on the project of selecting the young Gabriolans.

Sharon researched the sponsor process and organized an essay contest for our local high school students – Raven Davern and Keanna Velsen won.

As a result, Raven and Keanna will travel to Peru for five weeks this summer and stay, separately, with host families sponsored by local Lions Clubs in Peru. Their tasks will be to participate in everyday life in another culture, reside with a host family, serve as an ambassador for international understanding, and participate in local customs. Oh, and have a good time while accomplishing all of the above.

Congratulations Raven and Keanna from all Gabriola Lions and we look forward to hearing of your adventures upon your return!
