Opening weekend is this Saturday for the adult slo-pitch league on Gabriola. Spectators are welcome to come down to Rollo and cheer on their favourite teams.

After two years being a team short, the league has returned to having seven teams. To anyone out there who is still procrastinating about joining up, both men and women players are still needed by some of the teams, feel free to drop down to the Rollo diamonds this Saturday and talk up the teams.

Last year’s Thirsty Beavers had such a deep roster that they decided to split in to two teams this year and they’ll be playing against each other to kick the season off. Right at noon, the Thirsty Beavers will take on the Knotty Beavers at the Rollo McClay fields. At the same time, the 4:20s (fresh off hosting their annual golf tournament on April 20) will take on Arrrr-butus.

The second round of games start at 2 pm. The Stinkin’ Otters ( the 2012 league champions) will start their season with a game against the Knotty Beavers while on the other field the Thirsty Beavers will be taking on the Wildflowers.

A third round of games (it is opening weekend….) will have the Islanders taking on the Wildflowers on one field while the Stinkin’ Otters play Arrr-butus.

This year has already seen a ton of work done by the teams and volunteers. The Gabriola Land and Trails Trust, with help from the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Islanders team, conducted a broom bash, getting rid of the broom which has been growing next to the fields for a few years now.

The infields have seen major improvement, with new gravel laid down and raked. A proper infield drag mat was purchased by the league to replace the chain link fence one that has been the faithful gravel groomer for many years. The league is hoping to avoid some of the bad bounces (and subsequent facial injuries) seen in the past couple seasons.

And of course, the biggest news everyone was waiting for, Tannie Meyer has confirmed she will be opening the concession stand once again for the season.

Games continue Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights till July.
