Mahjong members meet 2-4 p.m. on Wednesday afternoons. We sit at two or three tables with a cup of coffee and a maximum of four players per table. Mahjong is a lot like a variety of card games, but we play with beautifully decorated tiles that represent winds, dragons, flowers, seasons, bamboo, circles and characters. The engraved tiles are a pleasure to play with. At this point we don’t score our games but just play to win, which is simpler and less competitive. Our reference book is entitled The Mahjong Player’s Companion but we also have a tutor who helps with the rules when necessary. New players are always welcome! The Gabriola Seniors’ Association sponsors a variety of activities. The centre has group meetings almost every morning, afternoon and evening throughout the week. You don’t have to be a “senior,” as new group members are always welcome. For more information, contact Rob Plowright at 250-247-2037 or r.plowright@shaw.ca.
