The 2019 Silva Bay Fishing Derby was superb in terms of weather (except early Saturday morning!), fish caught, happy people, and great prizes! Bill Von Brendel won the largest Chinook (under 80 cm’s) with a 16.84 pound Chinook. He also won the cumulative prize for two Chinook caught over the two days. He received $1,500 for the largest Chinook, and an additional $500 for the cumulative weight prize. Jen Schmeler came in second place with a 15.67 pound Chinook, and took home an $1,100 rod and reel. Robert Blyth caught the largest hatchery Coho at 5.84 pounds, and Raymond Penner caught the second largest Coho at 5.44 pounds. Oliver Schmeler caught the Ling closest to 15 pounds at 12.85 pounds. Participation was slightly down this year, probably due to the non retention rule, followed by the 80 cm. retention limit. That is really a shame, as the derby was incredibly fun! This year, Parker Marine did not donate the 9.9 Yamaha (they have, however, committed to next year), so prize money came out of the derby ticket proceeds. We do have approximately $2,500 to donate to the Nanaimo River Hatchery. Regan Lall won the draw prize of the $3,000 Lowrance structure finder. Congratulations, Regan!

Thank you our ticket vendors; Silva Bay Marina, Pages, North Road Sports, Harbour Chandler, and Gone Fishin’. Stewart and Jo run the weigh station with such exactitude, great attitude, and exceptional fortitude. What a team!  Clyde does such a great job of luring prizes, and Regan and Sylvie organize all the print for tickets, fish placement, and advertising. Tim Cosby did the cooking this year, and did a fabulous job. Thanks to Island Home and Garden for providing the new community barbeque! Thanks to all the participants, because without you, there is no derby!

Lastly, thanks to our many sponsors, your donations make this whole thing possible!
