This month and next, GERTIE enjoys charter trips celebrating our island and the coming festive season. On November 4, the Islands Trust filled a bus with staff, Housing Advisory Planning Commission members, and Snuneymuxw neighbour David Bodaly, who related First Nations history and culture on a visit to the petroglyphs and FN territory (IR 5 and 6 ) at Degnen Bay. Later that same evening, GERTIE bus driver Jay D picked up riders from around the island for a free ride to the evening event sponsored by the Islands Trust. David Bodaly welcomed a full house in the Phoenix auditorium at The Haven, for a two-hour session to learn about affordable housing needs on Gabriola.

October also had a special GERTIE bus ride - on election day, October 21, the bus was free for anyone travelling to and from the voting place at Gabriola Elementary School. This brought back a special memory for a few of us who rode the bus to the community hall almost seven years ago to cast our ballots in a previous election.

Coming up in December are two special GERTIE charters: On December 11, one GERTIE bus will take 20 passengers to Ladysmith to see the extraordinary light display the town puts on, and to enjoy an early dinner at Old Town Bakery, who will keep their doors open later than usual to greet us. Tickets for this festive event are $30 and this includes the ferry fare - available at North Road Sports.

And on December 18 we will have the annual Christmas singing bus - two buses actually, as they fill up quickly for this now traditional sing-around-the-island tour to check out Gabriola’s best lighting displays. Keeping with tradition, refreshments will be served and more songs sung at the final destination - the GAC Hall. North Road Sports is the place to go for these tickets too: $5 for children and $10 for adults.
