This week for the first time there was a light frost on the ground, and that can only mean that December, and Christmas is just around the corner. The end of the year can be a magical time for young children, and a special time for families to gather together. It is also a time, when we are aware of the stark differences between those who apparently have much and those who have much less. It is a time when parents are reminded of their shortcoming, when teenagers lust after shiny items of technology, and when those with loss especially feel isolated.

Gabriola’s Christmas Bureau was started many years ago to assist individual and families make ends meet at this time of year, when making ends meet is already a challenge. The Bureau is financially supported by individuals, groups and businesses. You can make a contribution by:

• making a financial donation to the Gabriola Christmas bureau account at the local Credit Union. Make sure your name is given with the donation, so a tax receipt can be mailed to you.

• Purchasing PHC’s $2 Christmas coupons at Village Food Mart and the Medicine Centre pharmacy.

• Donating to the Gabriola Lions Club at the ferry lineup. The Lions Club has collaborated with the Christmas Bureau since it started. With the Village Food Market donation, Grocery Gift Certificates are purchased and mailed to recipients.

The Christmas Bureau is coordinated by People for a Healthy Community and community volunteers. Registration forms can be obtained at PHC, the Gabriola Community Medical Clinic on Church Street, at the Hope Centre, or at the school, for parents of students there. The deadline to register is December 5th. The deadline for financial donations this year is Dec. 10th. This allows us to mail checks and grocery vouchers to registrants before Christmas. Donations received after this date will be used for next year’s bureau with much appreciation.
