The investigation into how power and telecommunication lines for Gabriola and Mudge islanders came to be cut last year has not yet been completed by Transport Canada.

As residents of both islands will remember, on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, a crane on a barge being pulled by a tugboat between Mudge Island and Vancouver Island caught on and severed the electrical and telecommunication lines connecting Mudge and Gabriola islands to Vancouver Island.

This led to the islands being without power for three days, and without any telecommunications (including 911 service) for five days.

This past week, Julie Leroux of Transport Canada said the federal department’s compliance inspection into this incident is still ongoing.
