On June 5, 2016 in the early evening hours, officers from the Gabriola Island RCMP conducted an impaired driving roadblock in the area of Taylor Bay Rd. Within less than 10 minutes a driver and vehicle were identified who appeared intoxicated by alcohol. Two roadside screening devices confirmed that the driver was driving while over the legal limit of .08. The driver was issued a 90 day driving suspension and had their vehicle impounded for 30 days. Approximately 15 minutes later another vehicle was stopped and the officer quickly determined that the driver was intoxicated by alcohol. Two roadside screening devices also showed that they were over the legal limit of .08. This driver also had their licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded for 30 days. Although the roadblock was a success, removing two heavily impaired drivers from the busy early evening traffic it is concerning that in such a short time in one isolated area of Gabriola two drivers were driving while impaired. The Gabriola Island RCMP will continue to conduct random roadblocks, especially during the summer months and will continue to make the roads safer for everyone.
