BC Ferries will be running extra sailings on holiday weekends and spring break - and started doing so over the Christmas 2017 weekend.

Over the past two summers, BC Ferries included the 1:50 and 2:25 sailings on Saturdays and Sundays, to help with the traffic loads on the weekends.

BC Ferries has they will continue to include those weekend sailings as a permanent addition to the July and August schedules.

The Gabriola Ferry Advisory Committee had asked BC Ferries to consider returning those weekend sailings to the entire year, or failing that, to at least add extra sailings on the holiday weekends, as is done with the major routes.

This past Friday, BC Ferries announced it would be adding in the holiday sailings.

The added sailings will depart Descanso Bay on Gabriola Island at 1:50 pm and Nanaimo Harbour at 2:25 pm on six weekends between now and the end of March, 2018; including December 23/24 and 30/31, February 10/11 (Family Day), March 17/18, 24/25 (Spring Break) and March 31 (Easter).

May Long weekend is not included in the list of weekends receiving extra sailings. Darin Guenette, Public Affairs Manager with BC Ferries, confirmed that is because BC Ferries can't commit to schedule changes (yet) which would occur after April 1, 2018.
