Cyclist dies after colliding with ferry terminal barrier

A 25-year-old Gabriola cyclist has died after running into a concrete barrier and parked car at the Gabriola ferry terminal this past Saturday June 24, according to Gabriola RCMP. 

At 3:30pm on June 24, BC Ambulance Service and Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department responded to report that a cyclist had struck a vehicle. 

The cyclist appeared to have first hit the outer concrete barrier of the ferry terminal and then the windshield of a car parked inside the terminal area.

Ambulance and Fire crews transported the cyclist to the Gabriola Medical Clinic, from where the person was then transported by helicopter to hospital in Victoria.

Cpl. Nathan Dame, detachment commander for Gabriola RCMP, said the person died later Saturday night as a result of the injuries sustained. 

The Gabriola RCMP are seeking any witnesses which observed the cyclist travelling on North Road toward the ferry terminal. Anyone with information, please contact the police at 250-247-8333.

As of press time, the name of the cyclist had not been released by RCMP pending permission from next of kin.
