Vanessa Craig is now officially the Director for Area B in the Regional District of Nanaimo.

The new members of the Regional District of Nanaimo Board were officialy inaugurated on November 13 at the first meeting of the RDN Board.

Director Ian Thorpe (City of Nanaimo) was elected Chair of the RDN Board and the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District. Director Bob Rogers (EA E Nanoose Bay) was elected Vice Chair of the RDN Board. Thorpe and Rogers, along with two others, are the only directors returning to the Board from last term.

Craig said, “I’m excited to be sworn in and it was great to meet all of my elected colleagues and many staff who I will be working with over the next four years.

“Since being elected I’ve had the opportunity to have numerous conversations Thorpe and Rogers...I’m looking forward to getting to work!”

The first RDN Committee of the Whole was held this past Tuesday night, see next week’s Sounder for news from that meeting.

Thorpe said, “I look forward to working collaboratively with my colleagues, listening to our residents and leading this Board to ensure the region continues to provide quality services to our growing and diverse population both urban and rural.”

Craig said since the October 20 election she has been having meetings and conversations with individuals and groups from Gabriola, Mudge, and DeCourcy, and meetings with RDN staff.

“I’m looking forward to making continued progress on ongoing projects and tackling some new issues and ideas coming forward.”

In Islands Trust news, the Local Trust Committee appointments were announced this past week - as members of the Islands Trust Executive were appointed to chair the various LTCs around the Trust. Coming to Gabriola will be Dan Rogers of Gambier Island.

Scott Colbourne, Gabriola Trustee, said, “I’m very excited to be working with Kees and Dan. We have different but very complementary skillsets and I’ve already learned a great deal from them in my early days as an elected official.”

The first Local Trust Committee meeting of the new term (and the last one of this calendar year) will be held tomorrow on November 22.

Colbourne said this meeting, “is an opportunity to set the tone and direction for our work over the next four years.

“I’m looking forward to defining our next steps on First Nations relationship-building, linking priority projects to broad community engagement, and scheduling meetings at times and in locations that encourage all islanders to take part.”

At the first Trust Council meeting in Victoria, Colbourne put his name forward to serve on the Trust Programs Committee and said his initial focus will be on service integration with other levels of government, particularly around transportation and safety standards.

“Former Trustee Heather O’Sullivan served as the Vice-Chair on this committee and I think it’s the best fit given my background in communications and advocacy work.”
