Gabriola Chamber to conduct Commercial Demand Forecast with $10,000 BC Rural Dividend Fund
The Gabriola Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that it has received a grant for $10,000 from the BC Rural Dividend Fund to hire consultants to do a Commercial Demand Forecast for Gabriola. The study is modelled after a project done in 2013 for the Rural Village Centres in the Regional District of Nanaimo. Gabriola was not included at that time because we are a part of the Islands Trust for matters regarding land use planning.
The objective of the project is to model the likely growth of the retail economy on Gabriola over the next 30 years based on demographic projections and, in our case, various scenarios including future increases in ferry fares.
The work will be done by Rollo and Associates of Richmond, BC, who did the 2013 RDN study and have some familiarity with Gabriola from work done for other agencies.
The work will begin early in April and be completed by late June. The Chamber anticipates a public presentation by the consultants of their final results.
John Peirce, Treasurer of the Chamber said, “This Commercial Demand Forecast will directly complement the Gabriola Economic Readiness Project completed last year through which we developed a good understanding of the 600 businesses currently operating on Gabriola. It will also provide critical perspective for the planning concepts developed by the Village Vision team.
“All of this will help the Chamber as it works to support our Gabriolan businesses, both today and as it looks to a longer-term strategy to develop a stronger island economy that supports our working families and a healthy, sustainable quality of life.”
