Gabriola Elementary enrolment down while district elementary numbers are up

Gabriola Elementary School enrolment numbers have now been confirmed by Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District #68, with the Gabriola enrolment dropping from 167 in 2014 to 148 for the 2015 school year.

The breakdown: K - 16; 1 - 16; 2 - 14; 3 - 17; 4 - 16; 5 - 30; 6 - 20; 7 - 19.

The decrease seen at Gabriola is not typical of the School District, as a number of elementary schools in Nanaimo-Ladysmith saw an increase in enrolment for 2015.

According to the school district, total elementary enrolment for 2015 is 7,840 students.  This is an overall increase of 322 students over last year. The enrolment growth was largest in the Ladysmith zone. 

It is in the secondary schools where SD68 is seeing a decrease, as the secondary enrolment for 2015 is 4,983 students with a decrease of 164 students compared to last year. 

The preliminary enrolment for district programs (Continuing Ed, VAST, Learn@Home K-7 and 8-12) for 2015 is 770 students. This is a decrease of 153 under what had been projected for 2015, and an overall decrease of 292 students compared to last year.

Overall the district is seeing a decrease of 134 less students when compared to 2014.
