December 22, the Nanaimo RCMP released a news bulletin on a wanted male from their area; Heath Handy, who was wanted for several violent offences.

The Gabriola RCMP were made aware from local residents that Handy was observed on Gabriola in recent weeks.

Around 11:30 pm on December 25, 2020 the Gabriola RCMP successfully located Handy and brought him into custody without incident. Handy was held in custody over the weekend awaiting a hearing before the courts.

He has now been released, and has a court appearance scheduled for Jan. 5, 2021.

Corporal Jordan Mullen, Gabriola Detachment Commander, would like to thank the public for their assistance and providing invaluable information to help locate Handy.

Heath Handy, 49, was wanted for assault causing bodily harm, break-and-enter, assault and obstruction of justice. The charges originate from an incident that occurred in June 2020 at a residence in south Nanaimo.

Nanaimo RCMP stated that just after 7am on June 4, 2020 police responded to the victims home and met her on the front lawn. The victim told the officers that Handy, whom she had dated for a period of time, had allegedly broke into the victim’s residence, and over a period of 14 hours, repeatedly assaulted and threatened her. She said that Handy had fled just prior to the police arriving. The victim was shaken and received some injuries, however they were not sufficient enough for her to be hospitalized.

Handy has family and friends throughout central Vancouver Island and is known to take harbor from time to time, on his boat named the Flying Vessel. Nanaimo RCMP say Handy should be considered violent.
