Gabriola RCMP

Press Release

Tuesday, June 30 2020

On June 28, 2020 at approximately 6:30 pm, Gabriola RCMP, BC Ambulance, and Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department were called to the 700 block of North Road on Gabriola Island, where a young male victim was found with serious injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle.

Witnesses assisted police with identifying the suspected driver and vehicle, who had not remained on scene.

Gabriola RCMP located and arrested a Gabriola resident a short time later and have now determined that impairment is believed to have been a factor in the collision. The male has been released on an Undertaking and the matter is pending court.

Gabriola RCMP would like to thank the Gabriola residents who rendered first aid to the victim and acknowledge the excellent work done by BC Ambulance paramedics and members of the Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department. The victim was transported to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Impaired driving remains one of the top causes of criminal death in British Columbia. While most people understand that drinking alcohol and driving is dangerous, people need to understand that using drugs, illegal and prescription, and driving is just as dangerous.

Acting Corporal Patti Evans, detachment commander of Gabriola RCMP, states: “This incident could have easily resulted in a tragic loss of life. As it is, the victim likely has a long road to recovery and the driver faces serious penalties for his alleged actions.”
