A decomposed body was found this past Sunday, May 2o on Valdes Island, just south of Kendrick Island, which sits at the eastern entrance to Gabriola Pass.

A family was out walking along the beach, discovered the remains and contacted the Gabriola RCMP.

Cpl. Nathan Dame, Detachment Commander with the Gabriola RCMP, said there was nothing about the scene to suggest this was anything other than human remains which had been washed ashore.

The remains, which Dame said were essentially bones, have now been taken into custody by the BC Coroners’ Service, who will be conducting the investigation to identify the deceased.

Dame said that could take a year or more. (The foot found near Drumbeg Provincial Park in 2007 took till 2013 to be identified through genetic testing). He added there was nothing to suggest the remains recovered from Valdes this past weekend were from the same person whose foot was found inside a boot on the westward side of Gabriola on May 6.
