Local Food: Beyond talk and into action!

Gabriola Commons

Tuesday, April 28 2015

Mark Tuesday, May 5, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on your calendars for a new mid-week market at the Commons, intended to actively promote and support growers.

Encouraging local food production is high on the agenda of a number of island groups, from the Gabriola Island Chamber of Commerce to Sustainable Gabriola, with the high point in February with the Food Forum. Getting produce from their farms to your kitchen at its peak of freshness is a goal local growers have been discussing since January. The idea is to set up a mid-week market at the Commons to complement the hugely successful Saturday markets at the Agi Hall. By taking turns managing the market cooperatively, growers will be able to get their produce to the Commons, then return to work on their farms. The afternoon time was chosen to engage commuters and parents picking up school kids.

With the Community Kitchen soon to open, refrigeration and cooking facilities will enlarge the scope of products offered for sale. There will be recipes and samples, destined to stimulate a craving for tasty food.
