People for a Healthy Community have been given permission to expand the Taxi Saver program.

This has come from the Regional District of Nanaimo, supported by Howard Houle, Regional Director for Area B (Gabriola, Mudge, Decourcy).

Brenda Fowler, Executive Director for PHC said starting immediately, those seniors living on Gabriola who are low income who have a disability will be able to use their taxi saver coupons in Nanaimo to go to the hospital or to a medical specialist.

She said this extension of service is in part possible because of the process People for a Healthy Community has established with AC Taxi in Nanaimo.

Eligible Gabriola residents will be able to ride with Gabriola Taxi to the ferry, and carry on their travel in Nanaimo with a Taxi Saver coupon.

This will result in a round trip saving of $17, a significant saving for those on fixed incomes.

Currently, approximately 45 residents participate in the program.

“There were smiles all around when Howard Houle attended the Monthly Seniors Lunch hosted by People for a Healthy Community volunteers to announce the change.”

Those wishing to register with the program can drop into PHC located at the Commons or call 250-247-7311.

The Gabriola Taxi Saver program The program will provide transportation assistance for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Low-income seniors will need to be evidenced by documentation provided to the GRS indicating enrolment in the MSP Regular Assistance Program, or other income assistance program, and that the person is over the age of 65. Persons with disabilities must be evidenced by a doctor’s note or other medical record demonstrating restricted mobility.

The Taxi Saver program is supported through Area B taxes, with an annual requisition of $15,000.
