PHC needs monthly donors to meet needs of Gabriolans

People for a Healthy Community

Press Release

Wednesday, May 13 2020

COVID19 has created new vulnerabilities for many Canadians, including Gabriolans. People for a Healthy Community’s (PHC) food programs have seen a high demand since the pandemic began.  Each week the need is increasing and we expect that the need will be ongoing for some time to come. New families are coming forward each week needing support through this difficult time.

In response to COVID19, PHC has adjusted their programs to meet the needs of the community while following physical distancing recommendations. The team of staff and dedicated volunteers are providing food support through a combination of groceries delivered and Nester’s gift cards to over 65 children from 33 families. 50 additional households without children are receiving groceries. Meals are also being included for some households.

As local farmers work hard to grow nutritious food for the upcoming market season, PHC will again partner with the Agricultural Association Co-op for the Farmer’s Market Nutrition Coupon Program. This provides low-income families and seniors coupons to purchase healthy items at the market with funds also supporting local farmers. 2020’s program is expected to be confirmed any day now.

As many things remain uncertain, one thing is certain,  we are all in this together and this is a marathon not a sprint. From the essential workers, businesses, volunteers, donors, and beyond, our community is stepping up to care for the most vulnerable.

If you’d like to support the work of PHC please become a monthly donor online at www.phcgabriola.org and look for the red ‘donate’ button at the top right of the webpage. For more info, please feel free to reach out at ed@phcgabriola.org or 250-247-7311.
