RCMP Report: arrest made on outstanding warrants; pickup fire on Malaspina Drive

On July 7, 2016 at approximately 3:30 pm Gabriola Island RCMP officers were on patrol when they observed a male on a bike known to police (Clinton Smith) to have two outstanding warrants for his arrest. Police attempted to stop the male by activating their lights however once he observed police he evaded arrest by ducking into some side trails. Over the course of the next 15 minutes the male was observed at various spots continuing to run/bike from both officers. The male was eventually arrested without incident at the intersection of North Rd. and Lockinvar rd. The,Clinton Smith was take to court to be brought before a judge later that day. Clinton Smith is also alleged to have been in possession of a controlled substance (Methamphetamine) on April 26, 2016 after an unrelated arrest. Clinton Smith is now charged with possession of a controlled substance and his next scheduled court date is July 12, 2016 at 9 am.

Truck fire on Malaspina Drive

On July 7, 2016 at approximately 11:30pm Gabriola Island RCMP along with the Gabriola Fire Department responded to a vehicle on fire at the end of Malaspina Dr. A newer blue pickup truck was found fully engulfed in flames. 

The owner of the vehicle was nearby at the Malaspina galleries after having just arrived on Gabriola to move here. The truck had a large quantity of items in it from the moving process, including various flammable items at the back. The fire destroyed the entire vehicle and contents prior to be extinguished. The Gabriola Island RCMP are continuing the investigation, however at this time there is no information indicating that the fire started deliberately.
