RCMP Road Safety Unit report

Cpl. Jennifer Prunty, Detachment Commander

Gabriola RCMP

Wednesday, July 24 2019

On July 11 the Gabriola RCMP were assisted by the Integrated Road Safety Unit from Nanaimo with some traffic enforcement.

While the primary focus was the illegal u-turns on Taylor Bay Rd., there was no shortage of Motor Vehicle Act violations to keep them busy.

The following violation tickets were issued in a 4 hour period:

8 - Prohibited U-Turn

12 -No Seatbelts

1 - No Driver’s Licence

2 - No Insurance

8 - Speeding

2 - Fail to Produce D.L.

2 - Warnings.

Also this week a 90 Day Roadside Prohibition and 30 Day Vehicle Impound was issued to an impaired driver by Gabriola RCMP.

The number of people not wearing their seatbelts is concerning. Some drivers state that they are safe drivers and drive slow so they don’t feel the need to wear a seatbelt. We would like to remind drivers that in the event they have to make an emergency manoeuvre to avoid an animal or prevent an accident, they could lose control of their vehicle if they are unable to remain in an upright seated position because they are not wearing a seatbelt.

It is then that they will become an unnecessary danger to all other road users.

In the coming weeks Gabriola RCMP will be cracking down on the uninsured vehicles parked at the El Verano boat launch and Wharf Rd.. Fair warning to those that have left their vehicles and trailers on these highway right of ways that if your vehicle is not insured it will be towed.
