RDN will be collecting used curbside waste containers on Gabriola on November 17 and November 24

Regional District of Nanaimo

Press Release

Friday, November 13 2020

Until November 30, 2020, Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) residents who do not want to or are not able to repurpose their used collection containers can recycle them. This initiative was launched as a response to residents who expressed interest during the automated cart selection period in 2019.

“I am pleased with how well RDN residents are transitioning to our new automated curbside collection service. We heard and are responding to residents’ requests for a region-wide collection and recycling of the used waste containers,” said Chair Ian Thorpe. “This is another great initiative to keep recyclables out of the region’s landfill and achieve our ultimate goal of 90% waste diversion.”

Option 1 - Drop Off at Approved RDN Disposal Facilities – until November 30, 2020.

RDN residents can drop off clean, used garbage, recycling and/or food waste containers during regular operating hours free of charge at either:

RDN Church Road Transfer Station – 860 Church Road, Parksville

RDN Regional Landfill – 1105 Cedar Road, Nanaimo

Please note, the free drop off only applies to the empty and clean used waste containers; standing tipping rates apply for all other waste. Any residents who want the used containers to repurpose for other uses, for example animal feed or storage, are welcome to pick them up at the landfill or transfer station on a first-come, first-served basis. At the end of the campaign, all remaining containers will be shipped to Merlin Plastics for recycling.

Option 2 - Curbside Pickup - November 17 to 28, 2020

RDN residents will have two opportunities to set out their clean, used garbage, recycling and/or food waste containers for pickup at curbside the day after their regularly scheduled collection day. Please note, only clean waste containers free of waste will be collected.

On Gabriola, the used curbside containers will be picked up on November 17 and November 24.
