Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public School District 68 (SD68) is not selling or divesting itself of the Gabriola Elementary School. However it is seeking to divest itself of responsibility to another property it owns on Gabriola.

Pete Szabo, Communications Manager for SD68 said despite wording used in recent media reports, there is no plan to sell the GES property or building as part of the long-term asset management plan. “Generally, the asset management program is about understanding our current assets and property assets and what we have them for and what the strategic use is.”

That can involve selling off an unusued property.

“We’ve been doing this for a year or two now, in trying to align our strategic planning so we understand what we are doing and when, and how we can support other projects. It’s what you would expect a business the size we are to do.”

Szabo would not state what property was being discussed, only saying it was another property on Gabriola - and that identifying that property as one that could be for sale could change the value of the property ahead of any potential sale.

“The property in question is not the Gabriola elementary school property or building, but another piece of property on Gabriola.”
