The rocks around the parking lot at Elder Cedar Natural Reserve were vandalized this past week by unknown person(s), with various slurs made in bright orange spray paint about Dr. Bob Rooks.

Similar slurs were used on the Sitka Cove realty signs located at Ivory Way, where Dr. Rooks is the developer of the properties along Taylor Bay Road. RCMP have said they do not believe the vandalism appears to be targeting Dr. Rooks in relation to current land applications before the Islands Trust.

The idea that someone would vandalize any part of the Elder Cedar area was met with shock and disappointment by islanders over the weekend. Volunteers from the Gabriola Land and Trails Trust spent Friday trying to clean off the rocks at the Grove.

Gabriola RCMP confirmed they had opened an investigation into the graffiti. No further details were provided.

The graffiti at Ivory Way is thought to have been done sometime on the morning of April 13, prior to 9:30 a.m. as that was when members of the public started to report it to the Sounder, Dr. Rooks, and RCMP. Anyone with potential information can contact Gabriola RCMP at the detachment’s non-emergency line: 250-247-8333.
