Community wells

To the editor:

Back in the 1970s, there were at least a dozen wells with hand pumps scattered around the island, available for anyone in the community to use.

I think they may have been required as proof of water in the early subdivisions in the 1960s. The hand pumps are gone, but the wells must still be there. These wells should be re-activated, tested for potability, and hand pumps re-installed.

They are a community asset and could be invaluable in case of any emergency. Whoever decided to shut them down should make them available again to the community.

Yours truly,
