l was trying to figure out how I could write an editorial on the psychological benefits of indulging in eye candy (Anyone else feel better after seeing Ryan Gosling’s abs in Crazy, Stupid, Love?)  but my editor wasn’t sure it was a great idea so I came up with this one. The last few weeks I’ve been reminded of exactly why I’m happy to be on Gabriola, even when we’re knee-deep in the season of dreary. First of all, I love that a show like ‘Erotica’ can open without anyone batting a fish-net stocking. This is a major contrast to other communities such as Abbotsford where the ‘Taboo, Naughty But Nice’ show just got cancelled due, in part, to public opposition. Secondly, I love that part of my morning commute is through a forest, past a variety of wildlife, and that my son can comment on how beautiful the towering trees look outlined in raindrops. I also love that Gabriolans come from so many different walks of life bringing with them an array of fascinating life stories that most are willing to share whether you meet them at a concert in a restaurant or in one of the Gabriola’s organizations. Finally, I was reminded how great the community is at supporting its members, when I faced a minor crisis last Friday morning. It was quickly resolved when a very generous fellow commuter declared he could easily go out of his way, way out of his way, to help me out of my pickle. So I guess my conclusion is that the psychological benefits of living on Gabriola might, just might, even been better then the benefits of periodically indulging in some fine eye candy. Wouldn’t you agree?
