Letter: A “Harper government”

Monday, June 10 2013

I wonder if anyone has thought about the possibility that the only reason Stephen Harper is “unhappy” about the Senate scandals is that the blowback has plastered egg on his face. He has never been a fan of the Senate and if it can be made to appear totally dysfunctional and disreputable in the eyes of the majority of Canadians it will be all the easier to disband it entirely.

With the Commons already effectively rendered impotent in terms of its ability to influence Conservative legislation in any meaningful way, Conservative MPs under control, access to information severely restricted, civil servants muzzled, if the Senate goes, we will truly have a “Harper government;” in effect a dictatorship of the Prime Minister and his office. We’re not really that far off even now.
