Letter: End open burning on Gabriola

Wednesday, July 8 2020

The recent fire ban during cov-19 was a blessing. Relief from the smoke or pM2.5 of yard fires over the last few months was measured on purpleair.org for all to see.

The practice of raking up yards and gardens and setting it alite is no longer acceptable behaviour. Those with asthma or other respiratory challenges suffer unreasonably from this thoughtless urge to “tidy up” property. Water cannot burn, ever. It is a contaminant of fuel. Green branches are 85% water. Garden waste is also too wet and must be piled and dried, chipped or composted. It is time to end this unhealthy practice of open burning. Thank you.

Yours hopefully,
