Letter: Increasing greenery

Tuesday, July 5 2016

Satellite imagery shows that the Earth is displaying more greenery at the present time than the recent past. The primary cause of this green increase is the rise in CO2. CO2 is a limiting component to plants growth mediated by the photosynthetic cycle that produces plant sugars. Another  byproduct of this cycle is oxygen. Of course there are other byproducts from the industrialized production of CO2 which are not as useful, nitrogen based compounds for instance. On the negative side of increased C02 levels is the acidification of the oceans which has deleterious consequences. When flying to your favorite Caribbean vacation spot you do not need to feel responsible for all the negative aspects of your flight, but can take pride in the fact that the Earth’s greenery will increase its planetary footprint because of your flight.
