Letter: Island Time

Tuesday, June 27 2017

The day I was officially welcomed to Gabriola by the gracious Elly Hallam of Welcome Wagon, I had already spent a morning at the weekly Commons work bee, incidentally learning from a master gardener as I thinned the kale in the community kitchen garden, and sharing soup and stories over lunch afterward. I then proceeded to GIRO, the Library, Arbutus, the Garden Centre, and the drug store where in each place the transaction seemed almost a by-product of the kibbitzing and easy chat between myself, staff and other customers. I felt totally at home on this island and thought: these are my kind of people and my kind of pace of life. Island time seems to be set a lot in pre-clock time, when time and tide were the same word.
