Letter to all Gabriolans

Monday, April 15 2013

The woman who died in the ferry accident on March 20 at the Gabriola ferry terminal was my amazing, beautiful, loving wife, and incredible mother to our two children, Krystal Anderson.

We were fortunate to live on Gabriola for five years and I am writing this as an open letter to all you wonderful Gabriolans to say thank you. Krystal truly loved this island. Gabriolans, you proved yourself to be a truly exceptional community which cultivates the great values of kindness, openness and generosity, as well as upholding dignity, grace and privacy. You should be very proud.

I can’t thank you enough for supporting me in my time of need, to allow me to help my children through this unexpected change. I am shocked at the support being shown to us through the trust set up by Diana Rose at the Coastal Community Credit Union. Thank you all so much.

The Sounder took the journalistic high road, so rare in these times, and shielded my family from unwanted intrusions. The editorial written in defense of our privacy brought tears to my eyes. Thank you. The Gabriola RCMP and the Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene in minutes and made their best efforts to save Krystal. Thank you.

Final special thanks to the gardens at the Commons and thanks to Caylee and Noel (and friends), Chris the Hauler and Dallas from the café. We’ve moved inland in British Columbia where I have a lot of family support, and we are all doing well. Thank you for sharing your beautiful community with us. May you and all beings reap the rewards of your good deeds in this life.
