Letter to Transportation Minister: Fix our roads

Tuesday, September 27 2016

Good day Minster of highways. I am a resident of Gabriola Island for 64 years.

From 1960 to 1990 the roads on Gabriola Island improved steadily over this time period. From 1990 to 2016 the roads on Gabriola island have declined steadily.

In another 4 years the roads will be about the same as 1960 standard.

I observe the crews patching the patches in vain hope to restore the crumbing surface .

I recently drove the road from Mesachie Lake to Port Renfrew. This road is 52 kilometers long and is in a great deal better condition than all the roads on Gabriola Island.

I also note that there are no tax payers that live on this road.

Gabriola has about 6,000 to 7,000 tax payers living here.

Why are you not improving the roads on Gabriola?

It is a waste of my tax paying dollar to pay the road maintenance companies to patch a road that is falling apart.

When do you plan to start rehabilitating our roads and not spend our tax dollars elsewhere?

I know that improving roads on the Gulf Islands is more expensive, but this does not mean that they should fall apart.

I assume that this problem has not been drawn to your attention.

I would hope that you will attend to my concerns.

Thank you

Kevin McCollum
