Letter: Walls never work

Tuesday, February 7 2017

The Romans built a wall across the north of occupied Britannia to keep out the troublesome Picts (the Scots didn’t arrive until much later, from Ireland). Hadrian’s Wall didn’t work though. The Chinese built a humungously long wall to keep out the northern nomads. That wall is still standing but it also didn’t work. The barbarians invaded anyway and then ruled China for centuries. Rather more recently, the East Germans built a wall across Berlin. It was dismantled a couple of decades later. The Israelis have also built a very ugly wall. It’s not working either. Einstein’s famous definition of madness: repeating the same procedure over and over again while expecting a different outcome.

Ah, but Trump cunningly says he’s going to get Mexico to pay for his wall by imposing a 20 per cent tax on Mexican imports. Oh really? And just who’s going to buy those imports? Americans, that’s who. So who exactly is going to pay for his wall? How long will it take for enough people to see that this witless emperor has no clothes?
