One less car in the parking lot

Tuesday, January 26 2016

Because I ride GERTIE every Monday to Friday to and from work, my car is not in the parking lot nor in any parking area around the ferry, nor in the lineup for the ferry.

I have been riding GERTIE since the very first day she went on the road. At that time, it was the big yellow bus with the bell attached to the string over the windows. It was the start of a beautiful friendship. Riding GERTIE has been one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. I have met the greatest people that I would not have otherwise met and made some lasting friendships.

The people that use this service are as varied as the reasons they ride. Kids going to and from their friend’s house (flush with the excitement of their grown-up independence), seniors going home from shopping, high school students who missed the school bus, commuters like myself, boaters from Silva Bay going to the Village for groceries, the list is endless.

And don’t forget, GERTIE also provides needed transportation to and from events such as elections, Canada Day celebrations, etc. GERTIE provides much more than a convenient transportation option though. She has tied this island community together in a way not otherwise possible. Our community is so much stronger and healthier because of this service. Please, on February 13, vote yes  for GERTIE.
