Think about it

As a home owner on Gabriola I am concerned about the bus referendum. To this I have been looking into the facts of the matter. According to GERTIE’s own website they only collected $32,000 from ridership in the past year but are asking for $136,000 plus from the RDN. According to Wendy Idema with the finance department of the RDN our cost on our property taxes will be $15 per $100,000 assessed value, on average $45 - $65 per household, and is able to increase substantially over the next five years to a maximum of $30 per $100,000 of assessed value. That would indicate a rough amount per home of $90 - $150 per year. This will put their budget to $250,000 from properties on Gabriola, Mudge and DeCourcy.

According to Howard Houle, they can go from $136,000 to $250,000, which is an 84 per cent increase. An 84 per cent increase from $15 per $100,000 takes us to $27 per $100,000 or $81 - $135 per home on average. According to GERTIE’s own internet info, the buses are old and will need a lot of repair or be replaced. At present, the bus does not go into the back sides of subdivisions, so the elderly and disabled have difficulty accessing the service. Also the schedule is not very convenient for many people.
