Cultivate 2021 is a go!

Gabriola Arts Council

Press Release

Wednesday, June 2 2021

The Gabriola Arts Council is thrilled to announce that the Cultivate Festival 2021 is a go! July 1-4. Two days of theatre. Two days of music. All intertwined with art.

This is a new version of Cultivate, as COVID-19 has been playing with our ability to plan and we also purposely scaled the festival right back to focus on a solid footing from which to grow. Cultivate 2021 will be a community gathering rather than a full scale festival, so we can come together with limited audience sizes and lots of room to spread out at the Gabriola Commons. Bobbie Blue, Artistic Director created several versions of the festival as we were chased by the virus and is excited to bring you live entertainment after all the hard work we have done as a community to get through these difficult times.

Performances will take place at the new Reservoir Stage and on the South Lawn at the Commons, with a dance showcase on the North lawn of the Farm House. You will not find a beer garden or food vendors, instead we invite you to bring your best picnic filled with all the things you love to eat and drink. You will also need a blanket, cushion, or chair. Some chairs will be available but those camping chairs are super comfy to watch a show and how about those built in drink holders. Unfortunately we will not be hosting any children’s activities this year due to the restrictions we were working with before Dr. Henry’s latest announcement, but they will return next year in full force.

We would still like you to wear a mask, use hand sanitizer, keep distance from those outside your bubble, no parking on the new Village trail, and above all bring your best joyful self. At Cultivate you will find 3 theatrical performances, each performed twice, Life on Mars, Wilf Carter, and RED. Why so few you ask? Well when this was being planned we could not use a normal theatre tent, as they are fully enclosed, so we had to plan for productions on the Reservoir Stage and not many theatre companies had productions to offer. Bobbie worked with local production companies and they have adapted their plays to fit the available space. Each of the three are completely different and offer a little something for everyone, not to mention an Improv Workshop with only 8 spots available.

There are multiple music shows with acts such as: Brickyard Funk & Fusion, David Gogo, Diana Braithwaite & Chris Whiteley, Ed Peekeekoot, Foot Prints of the Wolf, Gabriola Dance Poetry in Motion, Heartwood, Kelly Haigh, Mark Woodside, Paul Pigat, Sandy Bone Smith, Sarah Osborne, Snake Island Railroad, and The Ecclestons. A wide variety of talent and genres that will leave you wanting more, more, more.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, June 2 at 10am. You can find them at: cultivate.artsgabriola.ca. If you have difficulty purchasing online contact Carol at the GAC office 250-247-7409 or by email carol@artsgabriola.ca. Cultivate also has an inclusivity program, so if you want to participate, but need a little help, contact Carol. All information will be kept confidential between you and Carol, Executive Director of the Gabriola Arts Council.

See you in July!
