Bike to Work Week 2014 is next week, from May 26 to June 1 and, for the first time, islanders can register as Gabriolans, rather than registering within the Nanaimo or Salt Spring Island areas.

Twenty thousand residents across the province participate each year, pledging to ride their bikes to work (and other places) rather than drive a vehicle.

There can be multiple teams registered from Gabriola; what is significant is this is the first year Gabriola is its own region.

Gabriolan Nadine Secord is welcoming all islanders to register and take part.

Those who register are also eligible to win prizes.

Registration can be done at www.biketowork.ca.

Secord said, “This is going to be Gabriola’s first year as an individual community. In prior years, Gabriolans just tagged along with Salt Spring. It would be great if we could get a few teams together.

“It’s a very easygoing event. You don’t have to bike every day during that week either, you just log the days you do.”

Secord added that if Gabriola is successful in putting together teams and solo riders this year, the community may qualify for funding for the 2015 event.
