Apstein and Windess voted in as Fire Board Trustees

Fred Apstein and Chris Windess are the two newest Trustees on the Gabriola Fire Protection Improvement District Board, as voted in at the 2021 Election held this past Wednesday, June 16.

134 persons turned out to vote, with polls open from 3pm to 7pm and again between 7:45pm and 8pm at the Albert Reed Memorial Fire Hall on June 16.

There was no advance voting or mail-in ballots.

The results:

Fred Apstein: 94 votes

Chris Windess: 70 votes

Dan Backe: 58 votes

Todd McNicoll: 35 votes

Apstein and Windess will take over seats from long-time Board Trustees Sandra Rudischer and Mark Noyon, who were on the board for 16 years and 14 years respectively.

Trustees whose terms did not conclude this year, and who are continuing to serve as Trustees for 2021-2022 are Penelope Bahr, Sean Lewis, John Moeller, Diana Moher, and Paul Giffin.

Chief brings new firetruck home to Gabriola

During the Annual General Meeting portion of the evening, Fire Chief Will Sprogis said that the day after the AGM - June 17 - he would be flying to Winnipeg to do a final inspection on the newest fire truck to be joining the Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department fleet. Chief Sprogis, along with his dad Bill Sprogis (also a Gabriola firefighter) drove the new fire truck back to Gabriola, arriving at lunchtime this past Monday, June 21.

Firefighter Awards

During the AGM, Sprogis presented Kyle Clifford with his 10-year-service pin.

Two exemplary service medals were presented, to Bill Sprogis, for 24 years of service, and to former Fire Chief Rick Jackson, for 37 years of service.

North Hall Captain Evan McIntosh, during his report to the AGM, acknowledged firefighters who have left the department this year - singling out former Captains Mike Stewart and Dimitri Tzotzos for their service to the GVFD. Stewart was with the department for five years, while Tzotzos was on it for 16 years. Both had served as firefighters, First Responders, and Duty Officers.

Meetings of the Gabriola Fire Protection Improvement District Board are typically held on the first Wednesday of the month at 4pm at the Albert Reed Memorial Fire Hall #1 on Church Street.
