There’s fresh energy in the air. Find out why at an Open House Launch Party for two new community co-ops that will help make Gabriola more self-sufficient and sustainable: EmPower Gabriola (a.k.a the Sustainable Energy Co-op of Gabriola) and the Gabriola Island Community Investment Co-op.

Join us Monday Nov. 5, 6 to 8pm at the Arts & Heritage Centre, to learn about these new co-ops and then become an owner-member if you wish.

EmPower Gabriola, a member owned and operated co-op, will provide sustainable energy education and alternatives for islanders, with the end goal of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions linked to climate change. It already has four energy initiatives on the go: promoting and facilitating solar arrays for community projects; continuing the heat pump project started by Island Futures, and investigating the benefits of air-to-water heat pumps; converting waste vegetable oil from island restaurants into biodiesel fuel used by GERTIE and in Glean Soap (now available at Nature Spirit Earth Market); and distributing Goal Zero portable solar panels and battery storage systems.

The Gabriola Community Investment Co-op, also member owned and operated, will finance local projects to create positive social and environmental impacts, from food security to housing solutions and renewable energy, while also providing a modest financial return to members. It’s an opportunity for Gabriolans to invest in Gabriola, and membership shares are now available for $500 each.

Both new co-ops have been developed in partnership with the Gabriola Co-op Network, which grows and supports cooperative projects in our community.

You can find out more and sign up for memberships Monday at the Arts & Heritage Centre (476 South Rd.) and by visiting
