Ridership on GERTIE has increased exponentially since the first ride around the island five weeks ago. The introductory week (pay by donation) saw 83 riders; last week’s total was 237!

Volunteer drivers and the GERTIE gang have received many smiles and encouraging comments from passengers, and the “tour Gabriola” run organized by Lindsey Godfrey last week was a wonderful way for residents and visitors to take in Artworks, the museum, Silva Bay and all points in between.

RV Yacht Club member David Brind (MV Mocean) sent a note thanking GERTIE for her invaluable service to boaters at Silva Bay who want to visit the rest of the island, suggesting that a higher fare could be charged for visitors.

Rather than do this, we welcome any donations above the usual fare – donations help with maintenance of both vehicles and training volunteer drivers (more are always welcome and needed).

We might even be able to decorate the buses with art done by a local artist.

This week GERTIE picked up two regular passengers who have their own personal, portable bus depots! Both riders – one in the Silva Bay area and one from Whalebone, have foldable chairs clearly marked “GERTIE” – perfect for sitting on and stashing nearby until your return home.

August passes and tickets are now available at all five vendors: Silva Bay, Artworks, Village Foods, Mid-Island Co-op and Twin Beaches Liquor Store.

Your comments to improve GERTIE’s service to islanders are always welcome on the website: www.gertie.ca, and please watch for notice of upcoming neighbourhood meetings for input into GERTIE’s fall schedule. Circumnavigation was never so easy (or fun!).
