GERTIE Release

Monday, September 23 2013

Let GERTIE be your designated driver on September 28, when the new fall schedule will be launched and introduced at the Village Liquor Store’s 10th annual wine tasting at the Surf Lodge.  A dollar from every ticket goes to GERTIE and, in return, she will be picking up off-island wine festival goers from the 1:15 and 2:30 p.m. ferries from Nanaimo, returning riders to the 5:35 p.m. ferry. You can also park and ride from the village at GERTIE’s usual stop.

After September 28 the new schedule will be at the usual outlets, with passes and tickets available from Village Foods, Co-Op, Silva Bay liquor store, Artworks and Twin Beaches liquor store.  We tried to incorporate as many suggestions from riders as possible; the new schedule now has mid-day runs Tuesday to Saturday, and stops in the Islands View and Buttercup neighborhoods. GERTIE would like to meet the 6:10 p.m. commuter ferry from Nanaimo and take people home, but budget and driver time limits that option, unless we hear from you - could we get enough riders to pay for that run?  Please let us know!

As of the end of August GERTIE carried more than 2,000 passengers, and we are hoping that ridership will increase as islanders get to know their community bus. GERTIE sends out a special summer thank you to Eli and Naomi Wakan who donated $200.00 from their annual art and book sale - what a generous gesture! Donations and sponsors are most gratefully accepted, and needed, to help pay for driver training and other transportation requirements. Speaking of drivers, more are needed to share the work and maybe add to our bus routes - training is provided at no cost to you.  Contact GERTIE at if you can help, if you have queries and, of course, to see the new fall schedule.
